GB&I, Australia & South Africa Claim International Cup Glory

The Great Britain & Ireland mixed World Cup squad, London Australia and London South Africa claimed International Cup titles last Saturday (03/11/12) at the 21 team tournament, held at Wasps', Twyford Avenue Sports Ground in Acton.

In the Mixed A grade, the London New Zealand team surprised all with some fantastic pool performances and managed a draw against defending champions, London Australia (2-2) and a win over the GB&I World Cup squad (3-1) to top the pool stages.

However, Great Britain & Ireland stole the show with their best performance saved till last with a dominant 11-4 victory over the Kiwis in the final. The win is a great confidence boost for the squad as they depart for the 2012 Tag Rugby World Cup in Auckland, New Zealand from 6th - 9th of December.

In the Men's grade, London Australia continued their brilliant record going through the pool stages undefeated but were pushed against the Great Britain & Ireland men's World Cup squad (3-2) in their first match of the day.

In the final, Great Britain & Ireland managed two early tries to take the lead and put the pressure on the Aussies. With their backs against the wall, the Aussies bounced back with three unanswered tries to walk away with a 3-2 triumph and their 5th International Cup trophy in the men's division.

The London Australia men’s teams have boasted an outstanding record at Try Tag Rugby’s International Cup tournaments with only one single game loss recorded in five tournaments. A record to be proud of!

In the Mixed social grade, a record 10 teams battled it out across the two pools. London Ireland (Green) topped pool A with three wins and one draw whilst London South Africa topped pool B with four wins.

London Ireland (Green) were eventually knocked out of the tournament in the semi final by London New Zealand, going down 6-3 whilst in the other semi final, London South Africa booked a place in the final with a dominant 8-2 victory over London Australia.

With two Rugby powerhouse nations taking on each other in the final, it was London South Africa's turn to shine in glory as the Mike Pan captained side defeated James Leggett's London New Zealand 6-4 in a very tight and entertaining final.

The UK Tag Rugby community would like to wish the Great Britain & Ireland World Cup squads the best of luck as they depart for the 2012 Tag Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. This will be the first time that Great Britain & Ireland have been represented at the Tag Rugby World Cup.

North London Too Good in London Origin 2012 - Article 17/09/12

Last Saturday (15/09/12) produced yet another fantastic London day with plenty of sunshine and blue sky across the capital. Perfect conditions for the 2012 London Tag Rugby Origin series!

This year’s series was held at Wandsworth Common which is on South London’s home turf but the home ground advantage wasn’t enough for the Southerners, who were swept aside in a North London clean sweep.

The North London Mixed social team paved the way for a successful day for the Northerners with a commanding 19-3 victory in the first fixture of the day. North London’s Aussie captain Ben Crilly-Hargrave was named best on ground.

The next fixture was the Men’s which started off well for South London, taking an early 3-0 lead after a matter of minutes. Going into the half time break down 5-2, North London bounced back and sealed a nail biting 9-8 triumph in true origin fashion. Dave Twohig of South London was named best on ground.

The much anticipated Mixed A grade fixture which had London’s finest Tag Rugby players on show had plenty of fantastic tries and tagging on display to the delight of the spectators. North London opened the scoring in the first minute of the match and never lost the lead with a dominant 25-11 win over South London. London Australia & North London representative, Tom Parsons was named best on ground.

The eligibility guidelines for London Origin are that if you live north of the Thames River, you qualify to represent North London. If you live south of the Thames River, you qualify to represent South London.

2012 - North London (Wandsworth Common)

2012 London Tag Rugby Origin Sides Named - Article 10/09/12

With the Autumn Tag Rugby season in full swing across the capital, attention now turns to the next representative event on the calendar; London Origin which takes place this Saturday, 15th September at Wandsworth Common

The London Origin series is a chance for the best Tag Rugby players in the capital to battle it out in good old State of Origin fashion; mate against mate, to see which side of the Thames reigns supreme.

The eligibility guidelines for London Origin are that if you live north of the Thames River, you qualify to represent North London. If you live south of the Thames River, you qualify to represent South London.

With North London winning the series in 2010 by one point and South London bouncing back in 2011, it will be interesting to see which side will notch up their 2nd series win in 2012.

This year there will be three matches taking place which will be the Mixed A grade, Men's & Mixed Social grade.

The team at Try Tag Rugby are delighted to announce the London Origin squads for 2012!

London Tag Rugby Origin is Back in 2012! - Article 13/08/12

One of the highlight events of 2011, the London Tag Rugby Origin series is back bigger and better in 2012! This year the London Tag Rugby Origin series will take place on Saturday, 15th September at Wandsworth Common (South London). There will be four divisions which will be Men's, Mixed A grade, Ladies' & Mixed Social.

In 2010, the inaugural London Tag Rugby Origin series was held at Battersea Park (South London). In a thrilling Mixed encounter, South London led 6-3 at the half-time interval and was up 8-6 with 5 minutes remaining. North London made a courageous comeback to seal a nail biting 9-8 victory with Tim Ross starring for North London.

In 2011, the South Londoners got revenge at Twyford Avenue Sports Ground (North London) and did the clean sweep in the Mixed A grade (9-7) and Mixed Social grade (10-5) winning both matches to clinch the series. Susie Courtney for South London Mixed A grade was the star performer.

This year, each division's matches (Men's, Mixed & Ladies') will count towards the series points to see who will be crowned the 2012 London Tag Rugby Origin series champions!

The eligibility guidelines for London Origin is that if you live North of the Thames river, you qualify to represent North London. If you live South of the Thames river, you qualify to represent South London.

Aussies & Irish Claim International Cup Glory - 11/06/12 Article

London Australia continued its dominance of Try Tag Rugby’s International Cup tournament, winning both the Mixed A grade and Men’s divisions while London Ireland (White) claimed victory in the Mixed Social grade at Wasps, Twyford Avenue Sports Ground last Saturday (9th June).

The wins will go down as two of the finest in the history of the London Australia Tag Rugby teams, overcoming the strong Great Britain & Ireland World Cup training squads in both divisions.

The London Australia Mixed A Grade team, who had earlier lost to Great Britain & Ireland (Red) in the pool stages, won their final 7-2 thanks to an explosive first half performance by Dane Challenor. Challenor, who was basically untagable in the opening exchanges of the match, claimed the Player of the Final award. The Player of the Tournament award went to former South Sydney Rabbitohs Junior Rugby League representative, Tim Ross who was representing Great Britain & Ireland (Red) due to his British heritage.

In the Men’s division, London Australia prevailed over a tough Great Britain & Ireland World Cup training squad in the final, 2-0 after both teams had shared wins in the earlier pool stages. Queenslander, Hamish Jones was named, Player of the Final with England’s James Kennedy winning the Player of the Tournament award.

On a positive note for the Great Britain & Ireland World Cup squads, they recorded wins over the dominate London Australia sides in the Mixed A grade and Men's divisions. This was only London Australia's second loss ever in the Mixed A grade division and first loss ever in the Men's division with both Australian sides stacked with quality players in which many have played at representative levels back in Australia. The World Cup squads are definitely progressing under the watchful eye of head coach, Pat Ginty.

London Ireland (White) defeated London Ireland (Green) 2-1 in a nail biter of a final in the Mixed Social division. London Ireland's (White), Steve Noonan was named, Player of Final while London France's, Nina Populaire was named, Player of the Tournament.

Meanwhile, many of the top International Cup players have put their name down to tour Ireland next month for the Pig N Porter Festival in Limerick. The 130 team event is the biggest Tag Rugby festival in the world and Try Tag Rugby are looking to send one A Grade and two Mixed Social teams. The A grade team is a great chance of winning the whole tournament, with experienced players Tom Parsons and Patrick Wright leading the way. For more details, click here.
