Try Tag Rugby to Launch in Coventry and Warwickshire

by | Apr 11, 2018 | News

Try Tag Rugby are pleased to announce the launch of a brand new region which will begin operations in Coventry and Warwickshire imminently.

Try Tag Rugby, the Rugby Football League’s (RFL) Tag Rugby League partner, is the UK delegate to the International Tag Federation (ITF) and currently operates in London, Manchester, the Thames Valley and Yorkshire and are pleased to be expanding into three new regions this year, the first of which is Coventry and Warwickshire.

Tag Rugby is a fun and exciting non-contact social sport suitable for adults; no previous rugby experience is necessary; it’s a sport that can be enjoyed by beginners and experienced players alike and is proving really popular!

Irrelevant of age, gender or experience level, and with Coventry and Warwickshire having large numbers of contact rugby players, this is a great way for ex-players, player’s partners, current players and people that can’t commit to training twice a week and playing on weekends to still get a rugby ball in their hands and have a run around.

The Coventry and Warwickshire franchise is going to be run by Troy Perkins and Alan Robinson, two very experienced former Rugby players and coaches. Troy, a former NRL player currently works as a Rugby coach, working with Wasps Rugby club and he delivers the RFL’s Sky Try programme in primary schools across the city on behalf of Bears in the Community CIC. Alan is the founder and CEO of the professional Rugby League club, Coventry Bears, celebrating their 20th Anniversary year. The pair have been solid friends for 15 years and are excited to bring this new opportunity to people across their region.

The Coventry and Warwickshire region will start with two leagues, consisting of a men’s league on Wednesday evenings at Coventrians RFC (CV6 4AF) and a mixed league on Thursday evenings at The Xcel centre (CV4 8DY). Further venues in Solihull, Rugby and Stratford are planned for the near future.

All registered Try Tag Rugby players in this region will also receive two free tickets to watch the Coventry Bears.

Free Taster Sessions will be held at Coventrians RFC on Wednesday, 25th April at 7pm and at The Xcel centre on Thursday, 26th April at 7pm.

The league start dates are as follows:
Coventrians RFC (Wednesdays Men’s) – 9th May
The Xcel centre (Thursdays Mixed) – 10th May

Tag Rugby is a very social sport and a great way to meet new people as well as a chance to meet up with existing friends. All leagues in Coventry and Warwickshire will come with great after match venues to host Try Tag Rugby weekly post-match socials, where players come together to enjoy a drink and a bite to eat with their team mates and opposition.

Try Tag Rugby CEO, Phillip Browne commented, “We’re delighted to be launching in Coventry and Warwickshire in 2018 and are looking to continue our expansion in 2018 with more regions set to be announced soon.

“We believe we’ve found some great operators with good business acumen who will adhere to the fun, welcoming and social ethos of Try Tag Rugby and represent us admirably.”

Registration for the taster sessions and the league are now open for individuals, groups and teams. If signing up as an individual or group, Try Tag Rugby will put players into a team.

What is Tag Rugby?

Tag Rugby is a minimal contact team game in which each player wears shorts with velcro patches with two tags attached to them. The mode of play is similar to Rugby League or Touch Rugby with attacking players attempting to dodge, evade and pass a rugby ball while defenders attempt to prevent them scoring by “tagging” – pulling a velcro attached tag from the ball carrier. Seven players in each team are allowed on the field at a time, whilst the field dimensions are 70m by 50m. The attacking team has six plays or tags to try to score a try or take the ball down field as close to the line as possible. Tries are worth one point and there are no conversions. In mixed Tag Rugby, female tries are worth two points.
