After a review into our tournament offerings, we are excited to launch our full events calendar for 2023 which has something for every section of our community nationwide.
Our events calendar starts earlier than usual next year with the Sam Winter Memorial Tournament, taking place at Trailfinders Sports Ground on Saturday 4th February. More information is available with individual registration already open here with all profits going to charity partners. For all those who knew our friend Sam, this is sure to be a wonderful way to remember his legacy, share stories of his exploits on and off the tag field, and to raise money for a good cause in his memory.
Social Tournaments
Our three main social tournaments in London will again be the Spring Tournament (1st April – King’s House), TagFest London (10th June – Richmond Athletic Ground) and the Autumn Tournament (21st October – King’s House).
Each event has a focus on a slightly different aspect of the game – the Spring Tournament is designed to find the best club side from each of the elite, intermediate and beginner levels of the game; TagFest London will provide the biggest and best off-field offering in TTR’s history to showcase all that Tag encourages postgame at the height of the season; while the Autumn Tournament is an opportunity for all the new summer teams to test themselves against some of the more established teams in our community.
Once again TagFest London kicks-off the nationwide series of TagFest tournaments with Edinburgh North running their inaugural event alongside returning offerings from Wigan, Coventry & Warwickshire and Bristol (all July), Yorkshire (August) and Oxford (September). Manchester will host an autumn tournament in October giving an amazing opportunity to combine a day of tag with a social trip to the Super League Grand Final. All these events provide a great opportunity from teams around the country to go on tour and experience what each region has to offer.
Following feedback from our community we are pleased to announce that we will be running a Women’s and Men’s Tournament at the end of September. The exact date and venue will be announced in due course but this will be a single gender team entry tournament to provide a point of difference to our multiple mixed tournament.
We have also ensured that the popular International Cup will return to the calendar, sharing a date and venue with the 2023 British & Irish Cup. More details can be found in the Great Britain section below.
Corporate Events
Our flagship event for your companies to use Tag as a combined staff social, team building activity and networking event moves to an earlier date in the calendar this year with the London Corporate Challenge taking place on Friday 14th April at Richmond Athletic Ground.
Yorkshire will host its own version of the event with a date and venue to be announced in the new year.
UK Tag Nationals
To help the regions warm-up for the UK Tag Nationals (20th May – Richmond Athletics Ground) two Regional Tournaments will take place on successive weekends. 25th February will see teams from Bristol, Coventry & Warwickshire and Thames Valley converge on Oxford RFC. A week later, on 4th March, the Edinburgh North, Manchester, Sheffield, Wigan and Yorkshire sides will meet at Heaton Moor RUFC. Details of the timings and format for these tournaments will be released to the regions soon but each will double as a GB trial for players from those regions with Great Britain coaches in attendance ahead of embarking on their World Cup campaigns.
Following these warm-up tournaments, the 2023 UK Tag Nationals itself will take place at Richmond Athletic Ground on 20th May. Edinburgh North and Sheffield will be entering teams for the first time with invitational teams across all four categories being announced over the next couple of months.
Great Britain Tag Rugby
After an extraordinarily successful 2022, the Great Britain sides will have one final set of trials – kicking off with the regional tournaments on the 25th February and 4th march before the London trial on Sunday 12th March.
The selected sides will then turn their focus to their final competition before the World Cup with the British & Irish Cup again taking place on home soil, this time as a one-day event at King’s House on 24th June. For the first time the International Cup will be run alongside the B&I as it returns to the TTR calendar. This will allow all those who dream of representing their country to don their national colours and represent their heritage alongside the best international players from Great Britain and Ireland. The profits from this individual entry tournament will go toward supporting the GB teams in their biggest year since 2018.
The 2023 Tag World Cup is simply the most prestigious event in Tag Rugby. National teams from Great Britain, Ireland, France, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, as well as heritage nations from Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, China, Vietnam and Lebanon will meet at the University of Limerick from the 2nd-5th August to unearth the new World Champions in multiple age and gender playing categories.
The Great Britain programme is still seeking additional sponsor support for their World Cup year and beyond. Social Events
The postponed 2022 TTR London Christmas Party and Annual Awards is now confirmed as taking place on Friday 17th March in Leake Street, Waterloo. The only thing better than a Christmas Party is a combined Christmas and St Patrick’s Day party, celebrating the best and brightest players, referees and organisers in the game we love.
The TTR Birthday Boat Party returns to its traditional Friday night in September slot as TTR celebrates turning 14 and therefore old enough to play in its own leagues! The London End of Year Awards and Christmas Party for 2023 will then take place on the first Friday in December. Regional Christmas Parties will also be announced locally nearer the time.
Tickets for Rugby League and Rugby 7s events will be available for members of the Try Tag Rugby community as ever, through our online shop as the year progresses.
