Try Tag Rugby is excited to announce the start of a league in a brand new location, with a league due to start in Oxford this summer.
The league will be operated as part of a new Try Tag Rugby Thames Valley Franchise which will also include the existing Try Tag Rugby League in Reading.
Try Tag Rugby, the Rugby Football League’s (RFL) Tag Rugby League partner, is the UK delegate to the International Tag Federation (ITF) and currently operates in London, Bristol, Coventry & Warwickshire, Manchester, the Thames Valley, Wigan and Yorkshire. The Oxford League is one of four new areas that Try Tag Rugby is launching during 2019, with new Leagues also starting in Leamington Spa, Solihull and Wigan this year as Try Tag Rugby looks to further expand around the UK.
Tag Rugby is a fun and exciting non-contact social sport suitable for adults; no previous rugby experience is necessary; it’s a sport that can be enjoyed by beginners and experienced players alike and is proving really popular!
The new Oxford League is going to be run by as part of the Thames Valley Franchise, which will be operated by current Try Tag Rugby employee Roger Rebelo. Roger has been working as League Organiser in the Try Tag Rugby London leagues since spring 2018 and he brings with him a wealth of experience from running these leagues as well as a background in the sports industry prior to this. In addition to operating the Try Tag Rugby Thames Valley Franchise Roger will be continuing as a part time League Organiser in London.
The new mixed Oxford League will be taking place on Wednesday evenings at Oxford RFC (OX2 0NA).
Free Taster Sessions will be held on the grass pitches at Oxford RFC (Postcode: OX2 0NA) on Wednesday 15th May and Wednesday 22nd May, with both starting at 7pm.
The Oxford league start date is Wednesday 29th May.
Tag Rugby is a super social sport and a great way to meet new people as well as a chance to meet up with existing friends. The league in Oxford will come with a great after match venue to host Try Tag Rugby weekly post-match socials, where players come together to enjoy a drink with their team mates and opposition.
Try Tag Rugby National Franchise Manager, Carl Duckels commented, “We’re delighted to be starting a league in the world famous city of Oxford as part of the new Thames Valley Franchise. We are confident the people of Oxford will fall in love with Tag Rugby just like the thousands of people currently playing Tag Rugby weekly around the country. We hope Oxford will be the first of a number of new leagues started in new locations across the Thames Valley area over the coming years. There is great potential in the region and we feel Roger is well placed to realise that potential.”
Registration for the taster sessions and the league are now open for individuals, groups and teams. If signing up as an individual or group, Try Tag Rugby will put players into a team.
Note: Any team organisers looking to re-register an existing team should login to their account here, and re-enter the team for a new league through the my teams tab on your player dashboard.
What is Tag Rugby?
Tag Rugby is a minimal contact team game in which each player wears shorts with velcro patches with two tags attached to them. The mode of play is similar to Rugby League or Touch Rugby with attacking players attempting to dodge, evade and pass a rugby ball while defenders attempt to prevent them scoring by “tagging” – pulling a velcro attached tag from the ball carrier. Seven players in each team are allowed on the field at a time, whilst the field dimensions are 70m by 50m. The attacking team has six plays or tags to try to score a try or take the ball down field as close to the line as possible. Tries are worth one point and there are no conversions. In mixed Tag Rugby, female tries are worth two points.
